Peppermint jumpsuit (are you sick of this jumpsuit yet?)

Hello, welcome to my last make of 2019!

If you’ve read any of my other posts you might have seen the jumpsuit already. I really like it, okay? I just wanted people to see it. But the writing part I put off, mostly because I went on holiday near the end of the project so it has lost the feeling of recency. I’ll try to remember though

So the pattern is the Peppermint jumpsuit pattern by In the Folds, provided free by Peppermint Magazine. I’ve been wanting a casual but classy summer jumpsuit forever, and this pattern was perfect. I was a little worried it would look better on a taller model, and not so great on a shorter me, but I think I’ve pulled it off.

The fabric is a poly crepe I bought on sale for $3 a metre if 3 metres or more is bought. So I got 3 metres. I don’t usually buy synthetics, I don’t like wearing synthetic clothes, so why would I buy synthetic fabric? But, my dad assured me that because it’s crepe it won’t act like synthetic fabric. Also, I really liked the pattern (I’m not usually one for florals but this one isn’t twee) and I thought it would do at least for the first jumpsuit.

I had to stick and cut the pdf pattern, which is honestly my favourite part. I find it soothing, and I have a system down which gets around a lot of the annoying bits (blue tack, long metal rulers, knives, and cutting matts). But, these pattern pieces are long. The body goes from top to bottom in one piece, but weirdly the front is not cut on the fold, so there’s a seam at the front (you can just see it here).

The instructions are a bit weird too. They get you to sew up half the front of the jumpsuit, but leave the rest free, and later the whole jumpsuit rolled up and pulled through the neck and arm facings. I’m not complaining, it made for a nice finish, but I was confused for a bit (or maybe I’ve just never seen instructions like this before).

I added pockets, but I decided placement by holding up the pattern to my body so I misplaced the crotch, and the pockets ended up halfway down my thighs. I need to stoop down to use them. Plus in such a breezy pattern they float about and drag the jumpsuit down. But I’ll be damned if I don’t include a pocket.

When I initially put it on I was a bit put off by the shape. It’s a bit shapeless which is great on some people but not me. So I decided to stretch and sew a piece of elastic at the waist to define it when I want it defined, and I sewed the matching tie to the back so I would never lose it.

Length-wise I am short so a cropped look isn’t so cropped on me. I don’t usually go for the cropped look anyway, so this one is a little cropped. For the next one I might be more adventurous.

I love this jumpsuit, I just feel so stylish and comfy. There are a few issues though. The fabric. It doesn’t breathe! If it’s a hot day I find myself lifting the pants legs by the pockets to get some airflow up there! So not ideal, especially since I made it for summer. Also, the legs get all static-y which just feels weird. But these aren’t deal-breakers. I feel like this jumpsuit breaches the the wearable barrier, (which I define as ‘I wear it because I like it and the issues don’t matter’ rather than ‘I wear it despite the issues’)

Maybe I’m getting better at sewing and choosing my fabric and patterns. Yay! We’ll see how it goes next year.
